‘Stop and search’ powers not to be extended

The Scottish Government had carried out a consultation on whether there should be statutory powers to ‘stop and search’ young people for alcohol. However, after overwhelming opposition from children’s groups, the Scottish Government has concluded there is not enough evidence “at this time” to support the measure being introduced.  Justice Secretary Mr Matheson said “Police Scotland are already phasing out the practice of non-statutory, or ‘consensual’ stop and search, following recommendations of the independent advisory group, ahead of the introduction of the new code from next year.”
