First Minister to consider abortions in Scotland for women from Northern Ireland
Scottish clinics could provide abortions for free to any woman who travels from Northern Ireland, under plans being considered by Nicola Sturgeon.
The First Minister has revealed that she is willing to risk a major diplomatic row with Northern Ireland by asking the Scottish NHS to explore ways of providing free, safe and legal abortions for those deprived of the service in their home province. She said in response to a parliamentary question “I believe that women should have the right to choose, within the limits that are currently set down in law, and that that right should be defended. When a woman opts to have an abortion – I stress that that is never, ever an easy decision for any woman – the procedure should be available in a safe and legal way.”
