Child Poverty Bill welcomed, with calls for further strengthening of proposals

New targets to reduce child poverty and a requirement on Scottish Ministers to take action to reduce child poverty in Scotland and to report on this are key parts of a new Child Poverty Bill introduced to the Scottish Parliament.

As 1 in 4 children in Scotland live in poverty, this is a key piece of legislation that aims to make children’s economic rights a reality.  Article 11 of the International Covenant for Economic, Social and Cultural rights sets out ‘the right of everyone to an adequate standard of living for himself and his family, including adequate food, clothing and housing, and to the continuous improvement of living conditions.’  This Bill is an important step towards making this real for children in Scotland.
