Renewed calls to close Dungavel after death

Anti-racism campaigner Robina Qureshi has called for Dungavel detention centre to be closed after the body of a man was found at the detention centre on Tuesday.

She said: ‘Dungavel is a human rights violation and should be shut down.’

Officers from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

Plans were announced last year to close Dungavel at the end of 2017, with a short-term holding centre to be built in Paisley. However, Renfrewshire Council’s planning board rejected the application and the Home Office then confirmed that Dungavel will remain open.

This news comes at the same time as the UK Government has rejected calls from the UN Human Rights Council to set time limits for immigration detention.
