Brexit bill improved on rights

The House of Lords are currently voting on amendments to the EU Withdrawal Bill.  SCVO and the Human Rights Consortium Scotland wrote to Peers to urge them to protect rights post-Brexit, highlighting the Scotland Declaration on Human Rights.

We are delighted that the House of Lords voted for these key amendments on rights:

• The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to be retained
• A right of action when EU general principles at stake to be retained
• Delegated powers cannot be used to change rights provisions

Over 65 civil society organisations are also supporting an amendment to the Bill which would require an independent review of Brexit’s impact on health and social care. This would see an independent review of the impact of leaving the EU on the four health and social care systems operating across the United Kingdom.
The proposed review would look at (amongst other things) the impact of Brexit upon medical research, health and care staffing levels, medicines access, funding and rights. It is likely that this amendment will be debated on 30 April.
