Urgent action needed to address disabled people’s rights
Rights bodies have criticised the UK Government for failing to take concrete steps to address the concerns of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Scottish Human Rights Commission and the Equality & Human Rights Commission, together with similar bodies in Northern Ireland, are the UK Independent Monitors (UKIM). They have published a paper that states that, along with disabled people’s organisations, they want to see progress on implementing all of the UN Committee’s recommendations to strengthen the protection of disabled people’s rights in the UK.
The paper focuses on the adverse impact of social security reforms on disabled people due to the gravity and immediacy of this issue, and recommends the UK Government takes immediate action, in line with the UN Committee’s recommendations, to ensure the rights of disabled people are protected and strengthened.
