Just Fair Issues Statement Celebrating Scotland’s Commitment to Incorporation
Just Fair, an organisation which advocates for the incorporation of economic, social and cultural rights, has issued a statement in celebration of the Scottish Government’s recent commitment to incorporate a range of human rights into Scots law.
Earlier this month (March 2021) the Government announced that, following the Parliamentary election, they plan to introduce a new Human Rights Bill, which would enshrine the following international treaties directly into law:
- The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
- The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women
- The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination
In expressing her support for the commitment, Just Fair Trustee Dr Katie Boyle stated:
“The programme of incorporation of economic, social and cultural rights is well underway… it places Scotland at the forefront of human rights progress globally – Scotland is not the first, nor will it be the last country to incorporate international human rights into domestic law – so what this means is that Scotland is in a sense playing catch up on a global basis, but has the opportunity to lead from the front by adopting international and comparative best practice.”

We will continue to work to ensure that civil society voices are heard throughout the process of writing, passing and implementing the Bill.
