UK reports on human rights progress

The UK government have reported to the UN Human Rights Committee on their progress in implementing UN recommendations under five themes. The report included:

• Domestic human rights framework – emphasised again ‘there are no plans to withdraw from the ECHR. The UK Government will consider further the human rights legal framework when the process of leaving the EU concludes.’ It also included details of the First Minster’s Advisory Group on leadership in human rights in Scotland.
• Combating violence against women and girls -the government reiterates its plans to ratify the Istanbul Convention and highlighted the new Domestic Abuse Act in Scotland.
• Tackling racial discrimination – the Racial Equality Action Plan in Scotland is highlighted alongwith a new minority ethnic women’s network and the recent review of hate crime legislation.
• Access to Justice – focuses on the Scottish Government developing its response to the review of legal aid.
• Combating human trafficking and slavery – details of implementation of the Scotland Trafficking and Exploitation Strategy, including funding for specific projects and a public awareness raising campaign.
