Poverty and human rights

A pile of coins.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states clearly that everyone has a right to a basic standard of living.  But, we know that in Scotland, there are many living without a safe warm home, adequate health provision, enough food to eat, or warm clothes to wear.

This week, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty & Human Rights, Philip Alston, arrives in the UK.  He will explore the UK’s action to implement this human right, and will visit Scotland on 8th and 9th November.

In advance of his visit, members of the Human Rights Consortium Scotland set out some of the key issues that he should address -you can read this joint submission here.

You can also read submissions from other organisations here.
